Caffeine May Do Harm to Kidney Function

According to resent researches, caffeine is not for people with kidney disease. Caffeine is a bitter, white crystalline xanthine alkaloid that acts as a stimulant drug. Caffeine is found in varying quantities in the seeds, leaves, and fruit of some plants, where it acts as a natural pesticide that paralyzes and kills certain insects feeding on the plants

A caffeine intake equivalent to just two cups of coffee per day (250 mg) was associated with increased prevalence of moderate-to-severe kidney disease in an analysis of 3960 men who participated in a American studies on diet for patients with kidney disease. Although caffeine reduction is now part of recommended lifestyle interventions for women, few studies have explored the association between caffeine and kidney disease in men, say the doctors, who suggest that the effects of caffeine reduction in men with kidney disease should also be evaluated.

The US National Institutes of Health states "too much caffeine can make you restless, anxious, and irritable. It may also keep you from sleeping well and cause headaches, abnormal heart rhythms, or other problems. If you stop using caffeine, you could get withdrawal symptoms. Some people are more sensitive to the effects of caffeine than others. They should limit their use of caffeine. So should pregnant and nursing women."

So kidney disease patients had better not drink caffeine. If you want to know more about diet which kidney disease patients should not eat, you are welcomed to send us an email to doctornickzhang@hotmail.com or leave us a message.
