Nephrotic Syndrome Diet
Nephrotic Syndrome is a group of symptoms that include protein in the urine, low blood protein levels, high cholesterol levels, high triglyceride levels, and swelling. Swelling is the most common symptom and it may occur in the belly area, face and around the eyes and arms and legs. If Nephrotic Syndrome can not be treated well, the condition may develop into Renal Failure or Uremia, in that case, you may be faced with dialysis or a kidney transplant. Except for the efficient therapy, reasonable and proper diet is also very important.
Changes in diet is the first step towards curing Nephrotic Syndrome and it is one of the best possible treatments for Nephrotic Syndrome that can be easily implemented. Patients with Nephrotic Syndrome should eat high quality protein such as eggs, fish, lean meat to compensate for protein loss. Proteins are found naturally in fruits and vegetables and having a pure vegetarian diet can also be a good option. However, in order to prevent the further kidney damage, excessive protein intake should be avoided. Also one must stay away from saturated fats such as cheese and margarine and excess of oily foods.
Patients should control fluid intake for they are unable to regulate their body’s water balance. Fruits such as berries, grapes and watermelon can help to stop thirst. Patients with Nephrotic Syndrome should minimize the intake of these foods, such as soda, juice and other beverages, ice cream, pudding, soup and so on.
Sodium should be limited in your diet, or it may cause fluid accumulation and cause severe complications. Something likes salted wafers, salted cashew nuts must be limited for they contain a high amount of sodium. Foods such as cereals, plain breads and rice should be eaten more.
