When you found the creatinine is higher than normal in a blood test, you
should pay more attention to your physical condition. Creatinine is the
metabolism wastes of muscle, which should be cleaned by the kidneys, keeping in
a steady level. High creatinine level is related with many factors. Now the
proper causes for high creatinine are listed, patients can have a look for a
prevention and treatment.
Kidney Blood Flow
When blood creatinine increases, it may indicate reduced blood flow to the
kidneys with a resulting decrease in the filtration and clearance of creatinine
and other substances. Reduced blood flow or low blood pressure can be a result
of heart failure, artery disease or severe dehydration. Kidney filtration rate
increases with body mass, and the creatinine clearance normally keeps pace with
the amount of muscle mass in healthy people. When a test indicates high blood
creatinine, reduced kidney blood flow can be one cause.
Kidney Damage
Functional damage to the kidneys can be due to injury or loss of the
architectural units where filtration is performed -- the glomerulus. An increase
in blood creatinine and reduced excretion are signs of lost kidney glomerular
function -- or glomerular filtration rate. Diseases that affect the microscopic
blood vessels in the glomerulus, such as diabetes, or inflammatory or autoimmune
diseases of the kidney, such as lupus, can damage the delicate structures
involved in kidney filtration. Some inherited conditions such as Goodpasture
syndrome, response to infectious agents such as Streptococcus and damage caused
by medications can also reduce kidney function.
Urinary Tract Obstruction
Another way kidney filtration may be impaired is when something obstructs
urine flow from the kidney. A blockage in the urinary tract, especially the
ureter, that transfers fluid from the kidney to the bladder, the bladder itself
or the urethra will obstruct the flow. Conditions that may block the urinary
system include kidney stones, congenital obstructions, postinjury or
postsurgical scarring, poor bladder emptying, or prostatic hypertrophy that can
be benign -- BPH -- or due to prostatic cancer.
